Folkestone Tap Takeover is returning for its third year next month—and this year’s celebration of craft beer promises to be the biggest yet.
The first weekend of September will see 19 venues across the town pouring beers from some of the nation’s best independent breweries, giving locals and visitors alike the chance to try something new.
Each participating venue will be turning over their taps to one specific brewery for the weekend—and the event’s strict ‘no Kent breweries’ rule means there should be something fresh for even the most well-travelled beer lover to discover.
Lauren Willis, one of the organisers of the three-day festival of brewing brilliance, said: “The idea is simple—each venue selects a brewery to take over their taps for the weekend. The only rules are that they have to be from outside of Kent and independently owned. We want to shout about our brilliant hospitality scene to people from outside of town and encourage Folkestone locals to try out venues they may not have visited before.
“We provide maps to guide folks around town so they can explore all the great beer on offer. We love seeing people walking around holding their bright yellow maps, hearing conversations across tables about the beer and which venues they’re heading to next. It’s great to hear that people have found out about a new brewery or tried a beer they’ve never seen in Folkestone before.”
PLAN NOW: Folkestone Tap Takeover runs for three days from Friday, September 4, to Sunday, September 6, and will be taking place at 19 bars and pubs across Folkestone and Sandgate. ❓ The Beer Shop will be staging its monthly Charity Quiz, hosted by Quizmaster Pip, on Wednesday, August 12. If you want to tackle the general knowledge teasers it costs £3 per player to enter, with a maximum of six people per team. There will be prizes to be won, but the main reward for success is bragging rights as the vast majority of money raised will go to a good cause. These quizzes tend to be popular, often selling out, but if there are tickets remaining when you read this you can get them here.
🎤 Musical Bingo returns to The Music Workshop this Friday, August 14. Hosted by AiMATE, this is not your average bingo night—players can expect great tunes, singalong moments, plenty of laughs and some fun prizes up for grabs. It all starts at 7pm and you can get your tickets for £5 here.
🎖️ The town’s annual VJ Day Service, commemorating the surrender of Japan in the Second World War, will take place at the Garden of Remembrance in Sandgate Road on Saturday, August 15. Civic dignitaries, military personnel and representatives of ex-service and youth organisations will gather at the Burma Star Memorial for the ceremony which starts at 11am. It will be led by the Mayor’s Chaplain, Kate McNeice.
🎞️ Films showing at Silver Screen Cinema this week include The Odyssey, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, and The End of Oak Street. Full details of all this week’s screenings can be found here.
🎸 Wannabe rock stars will have the chance to perform with a live band when Rockaoke comes to Speedway on Friday evening, August 14. The three-piece Joe Bulley Band have learnt almost 200 songs which singers can come up on stage to perform with them. The show starts at 7pm and you can get tickets here.
🎞️ Family comedy Mr. Bean’s Holiday will be showing at the Harbour Arm on Friday, August 14, as part of this year’s free cinema programme. The 7pm screening is completely free to attend, you don’t need a ticket, and spaces are available on a first come, first served basis. 🎙️ Chump’s Comedy returns to Quarterhouse on Thursday, September 24, with a lineup of great acts. Bringing the laughs will be Josie Long, Sam Nicoresti, Adam Riches, Rohan Sharma and host Maia Tassalini. The show starts at 7.45pm and you can pick up the last remaining tickets here.
🎙️ Comedian Ed Gamble will be performing at the Leas Cliff Hall on June 6 next year. Co-host of the award-winning mega-hit podcast Off Menu with James Acaster, the comic is touring his latest stand-up show Fresh Hell across the UK and Ireland in 2027.
