The bits of god we belong to and need collect within us daily; but so often they seem to be nothing more than feathers that float in oceans with no end.

The wise were right when they said that there are two worlds — one created by gods and the other, men.

The currency of god’s world stands as pebbles of mirth collected as tiny reminders- the poet John Berryman was right when he wrote “Goodness is bits of outer God.”

The issue is that we are to live forever in the mirth of god’s pebbles - the things we take for granted are forever the good things in our lives. We can have it no other way. We take for granted that the sun will warm us, that the rains will help to grow us food, that the dog will bark to say hello.

We take these things for granted because we cannot imagine a world without them - as spoiled children cannot imagine dinnertime without the concomitant dessert.

On top of this world of natural miracles, we build. Healthcare systems. Cell phone towers. Food delivered to your doorstep. Nail salons. Drugs to cure anxiety. Video games for endless entertainment.

So often these things go wrong because people aren’t perfect. But we look forever to anything beyond the given to achieve happiness. When the given is always and forever the things perfect and pure, you set yourself up for disappointment.

Reverse it. Make it a given that things built by people, especially the systems that enable greed, avarice, and thirst for power will fail at times and inevitably disappoint you at least on occasion.

The cell phone will die. The food will sometimes be delivered to you late. The video game will become boring eventually.

But the sky will forever be brilliant.

The sun will forever welcome your face.

The dreams will love your brain forever.

The things built beyond us cannot be erased.

The problem with the way most of us are living is that we have faith in the things people make and forget to have faith in the things only the divine could fashion.

The problem with the way we are living is that for every gigantic failure of man’s best laid plans, you must collect so many tiny pebbles of god’s mirth.

The little things in life make it worth living.

Isn’t your heart yet another little thing?

And how much will it too weigh?
