I’ve been using file system for a long time and have always thought of them as tree data structures. A couple of days ago, I had a realization that seems obvious in retrospect, but didn’t occur to me all those years before: The file system tree is different from what I’d usually implement as a tree structure.

This is the second part of my series “Data Storage for Humans”. In the first part, I analyzed different options regular users have for storing their data and the problems these options have. I then concluded by providing the following requirements for a “really good solution”. In this second part, I want to take a look at how these requirements affect possible solutions.
From time to time, friends or family members ask me for recommendations how they should store and backup their data. Most people (both technical and non-technical) I know have a sense that they should be keeping their data safe, but fail to actually do so. Instead of blaming them for it, I think we should create systems that make safe and secure data storage so simple that everyone can easily use…

I really like Ubuntu’s Yaru theme . Compared to most other linux desktop environments / themes it just looks, well…, good. It uses colors consistently, has a beautiful icon set and uses proportions / forms that look and feel right. There’s only one problem, and it’s the colors it uses.
