The System Isn’t Just Breaking. It’s Being Broken.

Over the weekend, Donald Trump ordered bombing strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, bypassing Congress and brushing aside the War Powers Act as if it were optional. According to reports, not only was there no consultation with legislative leadership—there was open defiance of the law. Legal experts have called it a violation of the War Powers Act, yet so far, silence dominates Capitol Hill.

There’s a reason Congress—not one person—was given the power to declare war. When presidents can unilaterally launch military action with no oversight, we don’t just lose balance of power—we lose the rule of law.

Meanwhile, state governments are quietly drowning under the weight of fiscal chaos left by the DOGE initiative. As Bloomberg reports, the result has been budget wounds that grow deeper by the day:

• Delayed teacher pay

• Infrastructure repairs postponed

• State programs shut down mid-year

Now states are stuck with expensive mandates and not enough money to modernize basic services. A recent survey shows that most state agencies can’t afford to upgrade critical IT systems—leaving our digital infrastructure decades behind and vulnerable to collapse or attack.

This is how systems break—not with a bang, but with intentional neglect.

And then there’s what’s happening to the people we rely on in our worst moments: America’s wildland firefighters.

This week, the federal firefighters union sounded the alarm on a new policy gutting protections and stability for wildland crews. The changes include removing housing assistance, slashing overtime, and pushing an erratic new deployment structure with zero input from the frontlines.

This isn’t just mismanagement. It’s governance by neglect, distraction, and intimidation. We are living through a coordinated attempt to erode government function until people lose faith in it entirely.

But here’s the truth: systems don’t fix themselves. People fix them.

Here’s what we need to demand, now:

1. Reassert Congressional authority—especially over war.
   No president should go to war without Congress. If they do, and nothing happens in response, the precedent becomes permanent.

2. Shine a spotlight on DOGE’s long tail.
   Governors, state legislators, and civic watchdogs need to document how this policy shift is bankrupting their capacity to govern—and push for federal corrective action.

3. Protect and support public servants.
   Whether they’re firefighters, election officials, or caseworkers, they are the connective tissue of democracy. When they’re weakened, the whole system suffers.

The system isn’t just breaking—it’s being broken on purpose. But it’s still fixable.
