A state audit found major gaps in how New York tracks recycling, including missing reports, unreliable data, inconsistent inspections and limited enforcement. Auditors found 64% of the annual recycling reports they reviewed were incomplete in at least one major section, while more than a third of facilities went uninspected from 2021 through 2023. The Department of Environmental Conservation disputed parts of the audit but agreed to improve reporting systems, facility classifications and inspection procedures. Auditors warned that without better data, the state cannot reliably measure how much material is actually being recycled instead of sent to landfills.
The Finger Lakes and Central New York are seeing a sharp north-south split Tuesday, with mostly dry conditions expected around Rochester, Geneva and Canandaigua while the Southern Tier has a better chance for showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures should stay in the lower 80s across much of the region, but areas farther south will remain more humid and unsettled. Wednesday looks like the best chance for a broadly dry day before another disturbance brings scattered showers and storms Thursday. Cooler, drier weather is expected to arrive Friday and continue into much of the weekend.
State Police are still investigating a fatal dump truck crash that happened Monday in the town of Palmyra. The crash shut down part of State Route 21 near Temple Road while first responders and investigators worked at the scene. One person died, but police had released few other details as of Tuesday morning. More information is expected as the investigation continues.
Yates County officials are preparing for several major financial and policy pressures, including possible new SNAP costs, rising housing demand and the next phase of broadband construction. County leaders estimate a federal change could cost about $55,000 per month if Yates becomes responsible for a 15% share of SNAP costs, while its $100,000 rental assistance fund was fully committed in less than two months. The county is also moving ahead with Phase 3 of its $17.16 million ReConnect broadband project, covering southeastern Penn Yan and Dundee. At the same time, officials are warning that health insurance and retirement costs could add more pressure to the 2027 budget.
The Trump administration is paying more than $1 billion to RWE U.S. Offshore to give up wind leases off New York, California and Louisiana as federal energy policy shifts toward greater fossil fuel development. The move comes after a series of stop-work orders targeting offshore wind projects, though several were overturned in court. New York has already invested heavily in offshore wind infrastructure and still has Empire Wind One and Sunrise Wind under development. Those two projects are expected to generate more than 1,700 megawatts combined, enough to power about 1 million homes.
David K. Ettman, a longtime Seneca County attorney, town justice, coach and community volunteer, died Aug. 1 after a battle with cancer. The 69-year-old came to the Finger Lakes through military service at the Seneca Army Depot and later worked as an assistant district attorney, public defender, Varick town justice and county attorney. He also spent more than 15 years coaching track and field at Romulus Central School and Mynderse Academy and served with several community organizations. Ettman had recently retired to Southampton after more than three decades of public and community service in Seneca County.
Boaters on Cayuta Lake are being asked to travel at no-wake speed because high water has partially or completely covered some docks and shoreline structures. The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office said wakes could cause additional damage while water levels remain elevated. Officials also warned that submerged docks, debris and other hidden hazards could make boating more dangerous. The advisory will remain in effect until conditions return to normal.
Ontario County has broken ground on a $24 million culinary arts center along Canandaigua’s lakefront that will bring Finger Lakes Community College, New York Kitchen and Cornell Cooperative Extension programs under one roof. The 19,287-square-foot facility will include teaching kitchens, a demonstration kitchen, tasting room, event space and offices, with completion expected by the end of 2027. Funding includes $11.1 million from SUNY, up to $9.38 million from the Sands Family Foundation and additional support from Ontario County and the Canandaigua Area Development Corporation. Officials say the center will expand culinary education, public programming, nutrition work and support for local agriculture.
