A 17-year-old was hospitalized after being stabbed during a fight with another teenager Thursday night in a Sodus parking lot. State Police said the two teens had a history of altercations before getting into a physical fight, during which one suffered a stab wound to the abdomen. The injured teen was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in stable condition, while the other 17-year-old later returned to the scene with his parents and cooperated with investigators. Police said the investigation remains active and aren't releasing the teens' identities because they are juveniles.
Showers and thunderstorms will remain possible across the Finger Lakes and Central New York through Saturday, with heavy downpours and isolated strong wind gusts the main concerns. Forecasters aren’t expecting an all-day washout, but some communities could see repeated rounds of rain and localized flooding where the ground is already saturated. A cold front will move through Saturday night, bringing mainly dry weather and lower humidity Sunday with highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s. Storm chances return Monday, with another round of heavy rain and stronger storms possible.
Seneca Lake had no confirmed harmful algal blooms between Aug. 1 and Aug. 7, even as dozens of blooms were reported on nearby Finger Lakes. The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association said warming water and unusually high dissolved oxygen levels are worth watching as August is typically a busy time for HABs. State data showed 62 confirmed blooms across the Finger Lakes between July 24 and Aug. 4, including activity on Canandaigua, Cayuga, Owasco and Keuka lakes. Pure Waters is starting weekly water quality updates and is asking people to avoid and report water that appears discolored, bright green or covered with surface scum.
Cayuga County will receive $132,000 from New York state to develop a suicide prevention plan focused on healthcare, schools and community support. The county will first receive $36,000 to study local needs and then $48,000 in each of the next two years to put its plan into action. Possible programs include expanding behavioral health care, training clinicians, addressing isolation and loneliness among men and increasing school-based prevention efforts. State officials said rural counties with fewer than 200,000 residents had suicide rates 90% higher than urban counties between 2021 and 2023.
Yates County lawmakers have a packed agenda Monday that includes concerns about rising SNAP costs, broadband expansion and a five-year capital plan worth more than $40 million. County officials estimate changes to federal SNAP funding could cost Yates about $140,000 more each year, prompting a proposal asking Congress to delay the changes for two years. Lawmakers will also consider expanding the county's broadband network and a $40.37 million capital plan covering roads, bridges, the airport, sheriff's equipment and other projects. The Legislature meets at 6 p.m. Monday at the County Office Building in Penn Yan.
Drivers should expect heavier traffic around CMAC in Canandaigua this weekend as two concerts and other events bring more people into the area. Zach Top performs Saturday, with parking lots opening at 4:30 p.m. and the concert starting at 8 p.m., while Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms perform Sunday beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday parking opens at 2:30 p.m., and gates open at 4:30 p.m. The Ontario County Sheriff's Office is asking drivers to allow extra travel time and use caution around the venue.
A Steuben County Legislature committee will consider several staffing changes, legal claims and a contract renewal when it meets Tuesday in Bath. Proposals include creating an inventory aide position with a salary of up to $58,803 and appointing a deputy public safety director at $98,665. The committee will also discuss legal claims, a contract renewal, surplus property and an appointment for commissioner of social services. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the county Annex Building and will also be available remotely.
A home on East Lake Road in Milo suffered fire, smoke and water damage after a structure fire Thursday afternoon. Firefighters from Penn Yan, Benton, Dresden, Dundee and Himrod responded after the Yates County 911 Center received a call around 12:35 p.m. Crews extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported. The Yates County Fire Investigation Team is working to determine what caused the fire.
