Everyone has a podcast, Etsy shop, or dropshipping store — yet burnout and debt are skyrocketing.
A few years ago, “side hustle culture” felt like empowerment:
Start a podcast in your spare bedroom
Launch an Etsy shop with print-on-demand mugs
Set up a dropshipping store from your phone
“Be your own boss,” “fire your boss,” “escape the 9-5”
Everyone had one. Or three. The internet was full of 20-somethings posting their first $1,000 month, influencers teaching “passive income,” and gurus selling $997 courses on how to do it too.
Fast-forward to 2026:
The stats tell a different story.
Burnout reports are at all-time highs (Gallup 2025: 44% of workers feel burned out “often” or “always,” up from 38% in 2020)
Personal debt (credit cards, personal loans, BNPL) is exploding — especially among 25–40-year-olds running side gigs
The average Etsy seller now earns less than $500/year after fees/ads (Etsy’s own 2025 data)
Podcast ad rates have crashed for small creators; most never break even
Dropshipping margins have been crushed by rising ad costs and returns
So what happened?
Did the dream just get oversold?
Did too many people chase the same saturated niches?
Is “hustle culture” quietly turning into a treadmill where people work two full-time jobs (day job + side gig) and still fall behind?
Or is the burnout/debt spike mostly from bad execution — people who didn’t treat it like a real business?
I’m not here to dunk on side hustles or say they’re all scams.
Lots of people still make good money.
But the numbers don’t lie: for every success story, there are far more quietly exhausted, in debt, and wondering why the freedom they were promised feels like more work.
