Around 2:00am, we learned that the US and Iran announced a ceasefire agreement, kicking off a two-week pause, ostensibly, in the conflict that has embroiled the Middle East for the last 40 days.
Then, at 2:56am, Israelis in the North entered their bomb shelters again. The south and center followed a few minutes later. Bahrain and the UAE reported intercepting missiles and UAVs from Iran throughout the day. It feels like the false starts of ceasefires past.
On top of it all, we’re not sure if the hostilities with Hezbollah have been paused too—the government says no, the external negotiators say yes, and Hezbollah has yet to confirm.
So, to be honest, today feels very strange.
But for the first time in six weeks, we ventured more than 150 meters from our apartment for a long walk with the pups, Golda and Moshe. The part of Haifa we live in doesn’t have many public shelters, so we’ve hesitated to go too far from home. Plus, when the sirens go off, the dogs get extremely anxious. They may be short in stature, but their barks are loud and sharp. It’s just easier on everyone involved to somewhere familiar, which means we’ve stuck close to home.
But today is a beautiful spring day with a warm sun and a slight breeze. So we took them to their favorite park—a big green open space with a view of the port. It was glorious. I’ve never seen Golda and Moshe so happy.
As we sat there basking in the sun, I took a full, deep breath for the first time in weeks, felt Science Baby kick me right in the ribs, and decided: for now, we can relax a bit.
Even if it’s just for two weeks.
