Kate Swenson · Finding Cooper's Voice by Kate Swenson

Last night, our family attended an event at our church/school. It was an ice cream social with bubbles and community for families who have a member with a disability.

Essentially, it was a place to come and belong.

This group didn’t exist a year ago.

But a bunch of us moms came together and decided we needed to create something. For us. For others. And for ALL of our children.

It can be a confusing journey to be a sibling to a brother like Cooper.

I know this. You know this.

The evening was perfect.

A gaggle of children running around, wild, ice cream on their cheeks, popping giant bubbles.

Cooper participated a bit. It was a bit hot for him. But he stayed all 2 hours. I thought we’d make it 45 minutes tops.

Nope. He willingly stayed.

I met an older man with Down Syndrome. A woman my age who has autism and lives in a group home. Two girls like my own boy. And more.

I found myself thinking…how lucky am I to have such a beautiful community.

There are a few things I say about our hardest years.

We were so isolated. And oh, how I longed simply for a place for us to go.

That’s it. A place to go.
