You can’t see it. But you can feel it.
There’s this pub, ‘The Welly’, where I live. It’s been around for over a century. Live music most nights, loads of proper beers and a caught-yard with an outdoor fire.
Around the fire are church pews and blankets.
You can’t be lonely there.
There’s a centre of gravity that draws people in. It connects people, not through status, through depth. Through a vibe.
Yep, a vibe.
I was one of the lucky ones who managed to get tickets to see the Oasis reunion at Wembley recently. Me and some old school mates.
That vibe was palpable. Emmence. I’ve heard it described by other friends as ‘communion’; ‘biblical’.
I like the religious connotation.
So what is it about a ‘vibe’, and how does that relate to finding freedom and maybe even business?
I’ve written loads about the concept of a beautiful business. It’s a state where the art and science are perfectly in balance. Everyone is loving it, from staff to customers. Even though I try, you can’t put words to it. It’s a ‘vibe’. When the vibe is there it’s palpable, just like Oasis at Wembley, or the open fire at the Welly.
Human beings don’t simply search out safety and comfort. That’s not enough. It’s not exciting enough. We want a sprinkle of magic. We spend our lives constantly searching for the vibe. Sometimes we find it.
Then we dance.
Time slows, and we experience a higher state of consciousness.
A flow state.
So clearly this transcends from our social world into our working world. Is the vibe any different between those worlds? I don’t think so. I think that’s the intersection between those worlds.
That vibe doesn’t just happen by accident. It comes from an authentic creative energy. It can’t be represented on a spreadsheet or through logic.
I think the vibe happens when someone goes with their heart. Following their intuition into places that logic alone wouldn’t dare to go. It’s about creating something that feels real, not manufactured.
You can’t fake a vibe.
People sense authenticity immediately.
They know when someone is genuinely invested versus just going through the motions.
So if you want to create that magic, whether it’s in your business, your relationships, or your community. You have to be willing to follow your gut into the unknown. You have to care more about the experience you’re creating than the metrics you’re hitting.
Look after the vibe.
Everything else will follow.
