I’m removing my serialized fiction from Substack...

I love and deeply appreciate the readers who’ve supported it there. But I can’t, in good conscience, continue publishing original fiction on a platform that has introduced AI detection for creative work.

This may seem like an extreme choice to some of you, but here’s why.

For an AI system to determine whether a piece of writing “looks like AI,” it has to analyze that writing. Whether you call it detection, classification, or something else, I’m simply not comfortable submitting my original fiction to AI systems for evaluation. As an author, that crosses a line for me. To me, there’s very little difference between asking AI to evaluate my work and asking AI to ingest my work. My stories are my intellectual property. I don’t want them becoming part of the ever-growing ecosystem of AI analysis.

Some people may be perfectly comfortable with that tradeoff. I’m not.

This isn’t about accusing anyone of wrongdoing or telling other writers what they should do. It’s about deciding where I’m willing to publish my work. Every creator has to make that choice for themselves.

What this means is that my serialized fiction will no longer be available on Substack. However, I’m not leaving the platform entirely. I’ll continue publishing craft articles and essays, and my podcast will still be available here. I’ll also continue sharing occasional updates and posts with subscribers. I haven’t made a decision about ROM 101 yet, but y’all will be the first to know.

So, if you’re here for the filthy fiction, I’m sorry. You’ll have to get it in book form. Season Two is already written, and I’ve already outlined and written two episodes of Season 3, the final season. The plan is still to publish them as books in 2027. Which sucks because this was funding a bigger launch plan that I now have to reconsider.

Anyway….

Thank you to everyone who’s read, commented, shared, and supported the story. I hope you’ll continue to join me, wherever my fiction finds its next home. My commitment to writing hasn’t changed. Only where I’m choosing to publish my fiction has.
