Each Monday our cleaning lady comes, right on time.
She scrubs.
She dusts.
She sweeps.
She shines.
She leaves every blanket
in ruler-straight lines.
The counters all sparkle.
The faucets all gleam.
The loft looks the cleanest
I’ve ever seen.
Then storms home
my seven-year-old rat.
And that, my friend
is the end of all of that.
I don’t need to ask,
“Now where has he been?”
he charges through leaving
his trail through the house.
a whirlwind mess
by this a rat (or mouse.)
A backpack.
A skateboard.
A shirt.
One shoe.
A trail of wet footprints
not one but a few.
Rubber bands.
Legos.
Construction paper.
Paste.
A half-finished project
left behind in haste.
His grubby smudges bloom
where small fingers reach.
On walls.
On the fridge.
On the glass
within reach.
I ask, “Was this you?”
He says, “Not me.”
As though every sock
fell straight from a tree.
But now he’s spending the summer
with Grand-mère in France.
First time our home had
such a tidy fighting chance.
Now I miss every sock.
Every stain.
Actually nope.
So nice to not be picking shit up all the time. Our house is immaculate.
I have absolutely no complaints.
None.
Not one.
