Courtney Romano · FilmStack Daily Digest

Happy Monday morning to everyone whose inner voice is currently chanting: LFG.

Date: Tues Aug 18th, 11a PT / 2p ET

Topic: Join us to discuss the Q2 report and the strategic takeaways & actions we can implement immediately. Including, but not limited to:

  • how to create geo-specific cinema ecosystems in your neighborhood or city

  • how to enroll local cinema lovers & audiences in support of non-dependent film

  • how to deploy a national mission but a local strategy

  • how to get more people out to see our non-dependent films

  • how we can support/collaborate/endorse each other’s films immediately

  • how to leverage ND50 for fundraising

It will be a focused group discussion with lots to cover!

We will be recording and posting it on the Notion Dashboard if you miss it. But whether you want to attend or grab the recording, make sure you:

If the Q1 Report was a lay of the land, the Q2 Report is a snapshot of the cohort. And with that information we can make some pretty strategic and interesting choices (both individually and as a community).

Please share this far and wide! Let’s spread the word about what we’re doing now, and what we’re doing next. PDF overview available for download here:

We’re in the process of making a private chat / resource landing page for ND50 off the Substack platform and in the Dark Forest Operating System (DFOS for short).

It’s still being built, but I have 3 invites (first come first serve) for anyone who wants to get in early and beta test.

JOIN THE ND50 DFOS

Dan Sickles of Moonbeem will give us a walk through of the new platform that harnesses the power of clipping to convert social followers into real audiences of your film.

For anyone who wants other people to use social to get the word out about your film… Don’t miss this one.

If you’re not sure what the NonDē 50 is, start here:

NonDē cinema is non-dependent on the current Hollywood ecosystem, and instead asserts the creative, financial, distribution and all forms of cultural control as the intentional responsibility of the individual team. Collectively, the workers in the NonDē movement leverage collaboration over competition, the sharing of institutional knowledge, and mutual support systems to help amplify both the individual films and a bigger movement that prioritizes the sustainability of the art, artist, audience, and cinema ecosystem.

It’s a coordinated and organized effort to get 50 NonDē films made in 2026.

This is a fundamental question I address in the original essay (below), but the TL;DR version is that our individual films gain more traction and assert more impact when they’re in the context of each other. I look at NonDē as a political movement and the films are the individual races for office. When one of us does better, we all do better.

Everyone from indie veterans to first time filmmakers!

Of course, you and I both know none of this would be happening if Ted Hope hadn’t written and encouraged us all to get on the non-dependent train.

Hope you find yourself dancing this week…
