Filmmaker Friday: Jafar Panahi

In honor of his latest film It Was Just an Accident, which recently received two Academy Award nominations for Best International Picture and Best Original Screenplay, we are highlighting director Jafar Panahi for this month’s Filmmaker Friday. One of the most courageous and resilient filmmakers of our time, Panahi has experienced everything from censorship to imprisonment from the Iranian government, yet he has not lost hope in his craft. Despite the restrictions imposed on Panahi, he finds creative solutions and takes major risks to tell the complex reality of the Iranian people. Facing imprisonment charges once again this year, Panahi refuses to relinquish his artistic integrity and voice to the government. Panahi continues to craft socially engaged and humanistic films that resist authoritarian tactics and ignite important conversations about oppression, dignity, and hope.
