After months of waiting, Marvel has finally released the first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. This video gave us our first real glimpse at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. We also see the Avengers, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men coming together from across the Multiverse to face another world-ending threat.
There are so many heroes in this trailer, but it says very little about what the film is actually about. But that’s why I’m here. Let’s break down the highlights and implications of this chilling and exciting trailer.
The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday begins with Professor X at the X-Mansion seeing what looks like an incursion that’s about to destroy his universe. We then hear Doom saying that in the face of this new threat, the heroes will have to make an “impossible decision.”
Though Doom is the main villain of this film, we also see the old and new Avengers fighting the X-Men. It’s unclear why they’re fighting, but it likely ties to that “impossible decision,” as well as comic writer Jonathan Hickman’s work on Marvel.
This movie is heavily based on Hickman’s stories leading up to 2015’s “Secret Wars,” specifically the “Time Runs Out” storyline. This story also showed Earth’s Mightiest Heroes trying to stop incursions from destroying the multiverse as multiple Earths collide. However, the comics showed the heroes facing the choice of destroying one Earth to save their own, or else both universes die. It’s a Sophie’s Choice of cosmic proportions.
If Doomsday really is adapting this storyline, then it looks like the Avengers and the X-Men will fight each other to save their own worlds from destruction. This is the new Multiversal War. We’re not gonna see variants of Kang the Conqueror fighting for control of everything. We’re gonna see heroes from different universes fighting so their own worlds can survive.
All this brings back the theme of sacrifice from Infinity War and Endgame, which also showed the heroes make sacrifices to try and save the universe. Wanda killed Vision to destroy the Mind Stone, Natasha took her own life so Clint could get the Soul Stone, and Iron Man died to snap Thanos out of existence. All in all, it looks like Avengers: Doomsday will raise some hard questions as the heroes make some hard decisions as their worlds face destruction.
However, it still looks like Doom will end up being the final threat, as we see Thor face off against the masked villain at the end of the trailer. However, when Thor goes in to attack, Doom easily catches Stormbreaker with one hand. Remember, this is the weapon that nearly killed Thanos when he had all the Infinity Stones.
If Doom could stop that attack with one hand, it really looks like the Avengers will lose in this film. Even though Steve Rogers has returned to join the fight for the Multiverse, it looks like Doomsday will feature a dark ending in the vein of Infinity War before the final Endgame-esque battle in Secret Wars to wrap up the Multiverse Saga.
