I never thought I'd be doing homework again...but now, every week several days a week I sit at my desk, and I do “homework for life”. If you read the following books, you might do the same. Here are the top books that changed my professional habits this year:
Scaling People by Claire Hughes Johnson : Want to run a team effectively? This book is packed with practical advice on operational efficiency. You’ll return to it at different occasions in your career.
Happy High Status by Viv Groskop : Most of my friends (and I) are outsiders of the UK system of high status. Immigrants or children working class parents, or both. If you relate, this book will improve how you see yourself and your value in your work.
Get Better at Anything by Scott H Young : Do you have anything you want to get better at? Or have you achieved perfection? This book provides a fantastic framework for learning how to learn. Foundational skills that anyone should have.
Stories Sell by Matthew Dicks : “nothing is as harmful as the ridiculous stupid assumption that anyone cares about anything you have to say - until you give them a reason”. Matthew Dicks wants you to tell stories: with protagonists (you), personal stakes, and transformations. A book that might change how you act even if you think the premise is obvious.
Debates: If your goal is to understand the world and people who live in it with you, it’s hard to do better than debates. For this, this year “Munk Debates”, “Open to Debate”, and “Moral Maze”, were my top listens
This is how I ended up with homework that I follow most days. What books / blogs / podcasts most impacted your personal development this year? Share in the comments! 👇
