🪡 Fabric as Narrative: Batik + Natural Dye w/ Drishti Jaggi

This workshop introduces participants to the traditional art of batik through a contemporary, accessible, and community-centered approach. Using wax-resist techniques, participants will learn how to design and create patterns on fabric while exploring the relationship between material, memory, and storytelling. Participants will be guided through the full batik process right away from sketching ideas and applying wax resist, to layering natural or fabric-safe dyes, and finally revealing their finished textile piece.”

Alongside writing, at this open studio we will discuss and make our own mail art. Bring any desired materials (or use ours at the studio) to fold, wrap, cut, and—send away!

“Let’s do some needle felting! Or “stabby stab” as we like to call it. Students will learn the basic techniques of needle felting (aka “stabby stab”) in this hands-on workshop. Using a barbed needle to poke wool we will make fantastical critters (or cursed ones) to give to a friend, rest on a shelf, or more! Students will also learn what supplies are needed, the different types of needles and wool, etc.. should they choose to continue to explore this stabby art form at home! All materials provided, no experience necessary.”

Step back in time with Prospect Park Alliance for a historic re-enactment honoring the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn. Join the Prospect Park Alliance, the Old Stone House of Brooklyn and the Brigade of the American Revolution to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, the largest battle of the American War for Independence. Please be advised that this battle reenactment will feature loud sounds and smoke.
🏛️ Walking Tour: Historic Buildings and New Interventions in SoHo
11am–1pm | Departs Center for Architecture: Manhattan (SoHo) | $30
The SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District, created in 1973, is dominated by remarkably intact mid-19th century architecture. Originally designed for both commercial and manufacturing uses, most of these buildings have been adapted for residential use. Meanwhile, over the last three decades, several entirely new buildings have been approved by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission as “appropriate” for inclusion within the district. This tour looks at these recent buildings as well as significant historic sites to examine a range of design strategies for historic districts.
