Hey, just a small catch-up after a few sweltering days at Pinewoods Dance Camp, where there was at least one day it was just too damned hot to leave Long Pond and balance and swing.

A couple of weeks ago, I made a whirlwind stop in Portland. The biggest revelation? If cabbage is on the menu, order it. I didn't have a single cabbage dish that wasn't terrific.
But before we get to Portland, I have to confess that I've never been a big fan of David Denby. He completely redeemed himself with “Why the Odyssey Keeps Defeating Filmmakers,” in The New Yorker. In the same issue? You don’t want to miss “The Readers” by Ben Lerner—required reading for any writer, narcissistic or not, who has ever been in therapy.
