You Owe Me Nothing. I Did it Out of Love.

I used to have this invisible spreadsheet in my head. I think most of us do, even if it makes us feel ugly to admit it. We keep track. I did this for you, so you should do that for me. I listened to you cry for hours, so you owe me at least a solid afternoon of undivided attention when I’m falling apart. I drove out of my way to make your life easier, so the least you could do is text me back right away. It’s a very safe, very mathematical way to live. It protects you from feeling like a fool.

But I realized recently that living like that was making me miserable. It was turning my heart into a bank vault, and I was just sitting in there, counting pennies, getting angry every time the math didn't add up perfectly.

I loved you a lot. I loved you enough to pour so much of my time, my energy, and my soul into you. And for a long time, I was so angry because I felt empty. I felt like I had given you everything and you had just taken it and walked away, or at least, you didn't give it back with the same intensity. I felt robbed. I would lay awake at night feeling so stupid. You feel pathetic when you realize you care more than the other person. You feel like you got scammed in some deal.

But then, underneath all that anger and embarrassment, I found something else. I realized something that actually brought me to my knees because of how simple and obvious it was—you didn't ask me to do any of that.

I did it because I wanted to. I did it because, at that moment, seeing you smile made my chest feel warm. I did it because holding your hand through a tough time felt like the most natural thing in the world for me to do. I did it because the love was inside of me, bubbling up, and it simply needed somewhere to go. I chose you to give it to. You were the destination, but the love? The love was mine. It was my capacity to care, my capacity to soften, my capacity to give.

I really don't like this generation—love is mostly seen as a transaction. If you put a coin in the machine, you get a soda out. If you put love in, you get love back. But that’s not love. If I only do things for you so that you will be indebted to me, I’m not loving you. I’m manipulating you. I’m holding you hostage with my kindness.

I don't want to be that kind of person anymore. I don't want to love people with strings attached. It is so heavy to drag all those strings around.

So, I’m cutting them. You owe me absolutely nothing.

You don't owe me a grand apology. You don't owe me a realization years down the line where you wake up and think about how good I was to you. You don't owe me closure. You don't even owe me your friendship. I am taking away the debt I secretly placed on your shoulders, and in doing so, I am freeing myself.

It is vulnerable to just stand here and say, "I loved you, I gave you my best, and it doesn't matter if you never return it." It feels like standing out in the freezing rain without a jacket. But it’s also the most liberating thing I have ever felt. Because if I can love you this much without needing you to pay me back, imagine how much love I have inside of me. Imagine how vast my heart actually is.

We don't love just to get love back. If we only did that, the world would be a very small, very bitter place, full of people just staring at each other waiting for the other person to go first. We love because it is what we are meant to do. We love to spread it. We love to put good things into a world that is so often dark and exhausting.

Maybe the love I gave you didn't come back to me through you. But it didn't disappear. It went into you. Maybe it made you a little softer, a little stronger, or just a little less lonely for a while. And maybe, someday, you’ll take that warmth and give it to someone else who needs it. Maybe that’s the whole point. The love just moves forward.

I don't regret giving you what I did. I don't regret the late nights, the sacrifices, or the moments where I put your needs above mine. I did it out of pure, messy, love. It was a gift. Once you give a gift, it isn't yours anymore, and you have no right to dictate what the other person does with it.

I am whole all on my own. I don't need you to love me back to validate the love I gave. It was real because I felt it. It was beautiful because I gave it freely. I am letting you go without any bitterness. You owe me nothing, and I am so grateful I got to love you at all.
