In case you missed it: My goal is to learn French alone from home and document the whole journey on Substack. For this reason, I am posting three short reflections in French every week so that I can share my progress in language production with you. You’ll find the English version at the end of the post.

Feel free to follow my steps if you’re interested in learning French, or to adapt my suggestions to any language learning endeavor you’re currently carrying out!

Here’s the English version:

I asked ChatGPT to give me a question to answer so I could practice the language, and it suggested this one:
Do you have a strange habit or a little daily ritual that defines you? Where does it come from?

That’s a nice question. I am a person deeply attached to my habits, and I tend to feel comfortable when I can live within my routine.
However, that’s not always the case. For example, when I go on vacation, it doesn’t bother me at all to disrupt my normal habits, but that’s because I am “outside the rules.”
During the week, I like not to wake up too early.
That might seem strange, since I am an extremely productive person, but I am convinced that sleeping well and enough is necessary for my success during the day. My work is mainly mental, and I often work or study until about midnight, so I need to wake up around nine o’clock to function.
When I get up, I first make myself a coffee: an espresso. That’s not at all surprising coming from an Italian!
Even though I have always liked coffee, I wasn’t as addicted when I was a teenager.
I picked up the habit of drinking at least three cups a day when I was at university!
On my ideal day, I would like to have time to take a walk before getting to work, but that’s not always possible. Still, if I can, I like to do it to get my brain and muscles started.
During my walk, I put on my headphones and listen to music or podcasts.
Recently, I’ve been listening mostly to podcasts in French or German, but sometimes I prefer music because it allows me to let out my emotions by singing my favorite songs, especially Taylor Swift.
After my walk, I am very happy to get to work, either preparing lessons for the following days or giving classes.
Usually, I have a short break around noon when I have lunch.
I’ve discovered that I feel good if I eat lightly, ideally a cup of yogurt with chocolate chips and a couple of biscuits.
I know that’s not necessarily the best choice in terms of diet, and I don’t encourage you to imitate me, but that’s what works for me right now.
On the other hand, I eat something a bit more nutritious in the evening, after finishing my work.
My husband comes home around half past noon, and he usually trains in our home gym during his break, and when I’m not working at that time, I like to join him. Exercise helps me feel better both physically and mentally, but if I don’t do it with him, it’s still hard for me to find time for it during my day, because there’s always something that seems more urgent to do.
In the evening, when I’ve finished my work and studied a bit of French by writing a post or reading a few pages of a book, I do the cleaning, prepare meals for the next day, and if we still have time, we like to watch a series while cuddling on the couch.
After writing all that, I’ll be honest, it doesn’t seem to me that I have any particular or strange habits.
I’ve rather described my day, and it’s clear that I like to live in a very structured and well-organized way. That way, I find the time to do everything I like to do, such as learning French!

And you? How does your typical day go?

Have a great day!
