First look: Google Stitch

First look at Stitch, a new AI design tool! Can it generate good website designs? We explore its features & potential together.

I explored a new design tool called Stitch, stitch.withgoogle.com, which was just released. I aimed to design a personal website with sections for projects, videos, and long-form writing, with a clean, editorial, modern, and refined aesthetic.

Initially, the results were similar to Squarespace templates, which wasn't very impressive. However, I then generated more variations and found some cooler options, especially with the "Blueprint Noir" theme. I was impressed by the automatically generated design system. I could instantly prototype the designs in a browser with mobile view.

I discovered that I could modify the design system and have those changes reflected across the designs. This was a significant highlight for me, allowing me to adjust colors and fonts globally. I found a design MD file, which I recognized as a way to ensure future LLMs adhere to the design choices when building an app.

I experimented with generating variations of a specific page, focusing on layout, colors, and fonts. Although some designs had issues like bizarre font wrapping, I was generally impressed by the quality. For a non-designer like me, it provided passable designs. I saw the tool's potential for professionals to speed up their workflow.

I plan to use Stitch more extensively and create long-form videos or livestreams to share tips and tricks as I learn them.
