Debunking the 40-Million Turnout Claim at Khamenei’s Funeral

Following the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the IRGC-affiliated Fars News Agency circulated an astonishing claim: an estimated 41 to 43 million people participated in the ceremonies across Iran and Iraq. These astronomical numbers, along with earlier claims of 10 to 24 million attendees in Tehran alone, have unfortunately been repeated and amplified by some international media outlets. Here is a detailed breakdown of why these numbers are a statistical and logistical impossibility.

According to a Fars News report, roughly 10 million people attended ceremonies in Iraq, which implies 31 to 33 million mourners at events in Iran (specifically in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad).

To put this into perspective, 31 to 33 million people account for roughly 35% of Iran’s estimated 2026 population of 87 million. Taking the claim at face value requires believing that one out of every three Iranians, including infants, the elderly, and the sick, attended ceremonies confined to just three specific provinces.

When we isolate the populations of the three host provinces, the claim breaks down completely. The combined total population of Tehran, Qom, and Razavi Khorasan in 2026 is approximately 23.4 million (14.68 million in Tehran, 1.49 million in Qom, and 7.24 million in Razavi Khorasan). Even if every single resident of these provinces attended without exception, organizers would still be 8 to 10 million people short of their claimed numbers.

Those additional millions would have needed to travel from other provinces. However, Iran’s intercity road network only has a normal capacity of about 2.18 million vehicles per day. There were no reports of the unprecedented, catastrophic traffic gridlock that would have inevitably accompanied millions of unexpected travellers pouring into these cities.

This is not the first time we have seen wildly inflated numbers surrounding this funeral. Spatial analysis reveals that official claims of up to 24 million attendees at the Tehran funeral events are gross exaggerations unsupported by evidence. Analysis of the Mosalla ceremony indicates a peak crowd of only 300,000, with total attendance realistically between 600,000 and 3 million, while imagery of the Azadi Street procession suggests no more than 600,000 participants. Furthermore, official claims of 17 million metro and bus trips are physically impossible, as they far exceed the Tehran Metro’s maximum daily capacity of roughly 3.5 to 4 million trips.

The Fars News claim that 10 million people joined the funeral processions in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala is equally fictitious.

Iraq’s total population in 2026 is roughly 48 million, with children making up more than a third of that figure. If 10 million people attended, it would mean that one out of every three adults in Iraq was present. Furthermore, an estimated 35% of Iraq’s population is not Shia and would be highly unlikely to attend. For this 10 million figure to be true, it would require us to believe that nearly two-thirds of the country’s entire adult Shia population travelled to just two cities on a single day.
