Exploding Comma

I was vaguely interested in reading this NYT feature recounting Michael Moore’s controversial-at-the-time/subsequently-proven-entirely-correct speech at the 2003 Oscars denouncing George W. Bush and the Iraq, but it consists of a single image and bunch of stupid text boxes I have to keep scrolling up and up and up to see.

They call it “interactive,” but it reminds me of the very early digital textbooks I worked on back in the mid-2000s, where they would take the illustrations from the textbook and farm them out to some Flash developer to add some super-basic, useless animation to them so that they could say they were interactive.

Who likes this crap? I feel like it’s web designers who believe they have to reinvent journalism or some crap. Meanwhile, I have to keep dismissing all the pop-ups imploring me to upgrade my Times subscription to get more recipes and games and insisting that this would all be so much better if I would just read it in their app.

NO. FUCK YOU. I pay a subscription and I just want to read the goddamned article. I was going to add the Simpsons “Old man shouts at cloud” gif to this post but I think it actually is worth being outraged about, because this is the sort of thing that is ruining the web.
