Huguette Caland’s sole artistic purpose, from the moment she left Beirut and stepped foot in Paris, was to re-invent the way we think about flesh. Armed with a draft(wo)man’s penchant for simplicity and a colorists greedy need for saturation, she set herself the task of showing body parts in extreme proximity, yet forever separated by a line that hovers just within view.
A large yellow rectangular painting in the second room of a three-room exhibit takes this idea to its extreme. Two shapes are pressed up against each other, possibly two bellies or two halves of a round behind. Caland gives us a minutely curved crimson line marking the point where the parts meet, and more importantly she gives us yellow for days. If you ever loved the serious joke of Ad Reinhardt’s black squares sitting next to black squares, this riot of every yellow in the world, like daffodils, goldenrod, and the sun shining through a fluttering cornsilk curtain will turn your head in a completely new direction.
