Today I learned that they are a “fancy” type of goldfish that is MEGA popular in Japan. Considered the “king of goldfish” because their aesthetics make them look like a sumo wrestler, they have actually been specifically bred over centuries to look like that. The two things I said when I first saw this fish were:
“Man, that is a phat fish. Also, what’s up with its face?”
Rebekka looked at me in horror as I said that. Which is when I learned that you’re not supposed to fat-shame fish 🤣. Or point out its weird facial features (which are considered an overgrowth called the “wen” btw).
But also, I mean, just LOOK AT IT!?
Aaaaanyway, I hope you guys are having a fantastic Wednesday! Last weekend I was recovering from a mad stomach ache, and I finally feel better and can eat normally. While I was out of commission, I found this fish while scrolling through Instagram reels, and I just HAD to tell people about it.

Fun fact #1– The original Space Jam Website from 1996 is STILL UP after all this time, and gives you a pretty great idea of how websites looked back in the day. 1996 was also the year I was born, which I guess makes me a Space Jam baby?
Fun fact #2– Browsers have a thing called Quirks mode. Taken straight from the MDN docs: “In quirks mode, layout emulates behavior in Navigator 4 and Internet Explorer 5. This is essential in order to support websites that were built before the widespread adoption of web standards. In no-quirks mode, the behavior is (hopefully) the desired behavior described by the modern HTML and CSS specifications.”
Want to know how to activate quirks mode in your browser? Just don’t include the <!doctype html>.
THAT’S RIGHT, this ugly tag you had to add manually in HTML class is there for HISTORICAL REASONS, and I find it really cool now knowing this! (I love how it’s called Quirk or No Quirks Mode too. I swear, engineers have the craziest “dad” sense of humor.)
Fun fact #3– GitHub literally buried open-source code in an Arctic mountain vault in case civilization collapses. I am not joking.
It’s called the Arctic Code Vault, and in 2020, they archived millions of public repositories inside a frozen vault in Svalbard near the North Pole. They stored the code on special archival film designed to survive for hundreds of years without electricity, just in case we ever have to rebuild civilization with open-source again, I guess.
I just wonder how Santa Claus fits in all of this? Do you think he’s in charge of protecting this vault? 🤔
