We are well aware that AI can now give one person the productive power that once required a small team. It can research a market, analyze data, write copy, develop a product, create a website, answer customers, coordinate tools, and continue working through increasingly complex tasks for extended periods of time.

This is extraordinary leverage for a solopreneur.

That leverage creates an interesting paradox. The same tools that give you an advantage are available to everyone else. When everyone can do more, faster and better, what makes your business worth choosing? How do you stand out?

For the first few years of widely available generative AI, simply knowing how to use the tools could set a person or business apart. One creator used AI while another did not. One business could produce in a day what another needed a week to complete. Access and fluency created a meaningful advantage.

That advantage is shrinking.

Intelligence is becoming less expensive, more capable, and easier to use. AI is being added to the software people already use, often without them deliberately choosing an “AI tool” at all. Google has announced customizable Search agents designed to operate in the background, monitor changing information, and return with synthesized updates. Research from METR also shows frontier agents completing increasingly long, well-specified software tasks, although that does not mean they can autonomously perform every kind of business work.

Adoption is not uniform, and not every solopreneur has turned AI into an operating advantage. Intuit’s 2026 survey found that 77 percent of U.S. small and midsize businesses reported using some form of AI regularly. Transaction-based research from the JPMorganChase Institute measured a much lower share paying for identifiable AI services, 17.7 percent by the end of 2025, but found that adoption was accelerating sharply. It also found that nonemployer businesses lagged behind employer firms, suggesting that the remaining obstacle is often not access or cost but the time and capacity required to integrate AI into the business.

The exact adoption rate depends on what counts as AI use. The direction does not. Capable intelligence and execution are now widely available. This moves the strategic question beyond which model you use or how many tasks you automate.

So, what does your business become when everyone around you can use similar intelligence to produce similar work?

The easiest way to use AI is to increase the volume of work you were already doing:

  • More articles.

  • More newsletters.

  • More lead magnets.

  • More features.

  • More social posts.

  • More automated outreach.

  • More products assembled from the same public information.

There is nothing inherently wrong with producing more. A faster operation can create time, capacity, and profit. But greater output is not the same as greater differentiation.
