Hello, America. I’m Erick Erickson. It is August 21st, and these are “The Four Things You Need to Know” before you get home this afternoon.

Before I get to those, I asked folks what they would cut. We could raise taxes 100% on everyone, and we’re still not going to be able to close the gap and close the national debt, so what would you cut?

Paul says, instead of what would I cut, I would say, what do we keep? There are only four, maybe five departments I would keep: defense, state, treasury, justice, maybe transportation. Many programs in those departments are simply pass-throughs of funds. You can keep small offices for deal intake and roll some of the other programs into the four or five departments. Medicare and Medicaid need large overalls by privatizing the medical system. Social Security needs a major overhaul by privatizing investments.

Tim says maybe the U.S. government should take Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and start following the baby steps. They could sell off anything that’s not mission critical and then use the snowball method to start paying down the debt as fast as possible. While they’re doing this, rather than raising taxes, which would stifle the economy, they need to remove government regulation and tariffs, which would stimulate the economy. The better the economy, the better the IRS cash flow would be. And finally, to satisfy all the people who want higher taxes, put a line on the IRS claim form where people can voluntarily contribute more tax that would go directly toward the debt.

Bombers Bay says, I am a beneficiary of this mess as my wife works for the federal government, but even she knows this is not sustainable and if Social Security does not become depleted, we will be around the age for being able to take it. She is eligible for retirement from the government now, but she’s not 60 yet, and we still have a younger daughter in high school. I just don’t understand how these politicians get away with this, except it’s the voters. They keep putting them there because of what politicians will do for them. And now we have even crazier people on both sides who will not be able to come up with any compromise when the poop hits the fan.
