There is something special about having your now-adult sons home from Uni. And, don’t get me wrong, I love them to pieces. I miss them when they aren’t here and I’m thrilled that they still like to come home and spend time as a family.
But oh my goodness, they are so big. And take up so much space suddenly.
We don’t have the biggest of houses and suddenly having two more adult men in it can feel like quite a shock - giant shoes everywhere and a constantly full recycling bin.
Despite the chaos though I am soaking it up, knowing how quiet the house will feel when they have gone again and how empty it will feel. Although I will appreciate food staying in the fridge for more than a day before mysteriously vanishing. And let’s not even speak about how much toilet roll we seem to be getting through.
I have trained them well though. They have both been through my yarn stash and picked out a skein of yarn they would like to be knit into socks for them. So I know what my travel knitting will be this autumn.

☀️ Lots of my sock patterns are written for magic loop knitting (1 long circular) as that’s how I prefer to knit. I was answering a question for someone the other day on how to convert a pattern to DPNs, when I realised I had already written a blog post on this very subject - and had totally forgotten. The joys of a butterfly brain. Anyway, the post is here if you’d like to bookmark it for future reference.
☀️ Speaking of socks - what’s your favourite heel? My go-to when knitting for myself is a short row heel, usually the Fish Lips Kiss heel (ravelry link). I don’t include this in my patterns for obvious reasons - I normally write a standard short row heel - but if you are looking to try out a super easy short row technique I can highly recommend giving the FLK heel a try.
☀️ I love learning a new word and this one is no exception. Tsundoku is the Japanese word for books you have bought but not yet read. How cool is that - and also how apt considering the pile of books currently on my bedside table 🤣
