Calm Isn't One Note

I've spent years believing I knew what calm looked like.

Sitting still. Alone. Quiet. No demands.

And that's true - that version of calm is real and I need it. The 5am stillness before the world wakes up and starts needing things. The noise on pause. The sense that I've finally hit a reset button, cleared my cache, heard myself again after days of the world being too fast and too loud.

But last week I discovered something that stopped me.

I went through Day 1 of my own journal - Returning - as a reader would. And one of the first questions asked me to describe what helps me feel calm and grounded.

I expected one answer. I got two.

The stillness I just described. And something completely different.

Deep conversation with someone on the same frequency.

Not small talk. Not socialising for the sake of it. But those rare conversations where something hums between you - where you finish and feel more like yourself than when you started. Where a frequency is left behind long after you've parted company, still with you hours later like a residue of resonance.

I've felt this for years with certain people. That alive, connected buzz that is the opposite of still and yet somehow just as restoring.

And it wasn't until I answered that question that I realised - I'd never once counted it as rest.

I'd been filing it under something else. Socialising. Effort. Nice but not restorative. Not the approved version of calm.

But here's what I know now.

Calm isn't one note.

For some of us it's silence. The world paused, the cache cleared, just us and the stillness before anyone needs anything.

For some of us it's resonance. Two people on the same frequency creating something that hums between them. Alive rather than still but just as nourishing. Just as necessary.

And most of us have been told it only looks like one thing. The candle. The bath. The sitting still in the approved quiet.

So we discount the conversations that leave us buzzing. We discount the connections that restore us at a soul level. We file them under effort because they don't look like rest.

And then we wonder why we're depleted.

I'm not wondering anymore.

My calm has two faces. The stillness that lets me hear myself. And the resonance that reminds me who I am.

Both count. Both restore. Both are mine.

And I'm done discounting either of them.

What counts as calm for you - and what have you been discounting that might actually be restoring you more than you know? Tell me in the comments. 💛

If this resonated and you're ready to explore what calm, rest and restoration actually look and feel like for you - I created Returning as a 30 day journal to help you find your way back to yourself. Gently. At your own pace.
