A few years ago I released a series called “Swimming in Pattern” where I juxtaposed fish with different patterned backdrops. The response has inspired me to revisit the series with a focus on its most favorited pattern—plaids. I started by painting dozens of pattern watercolors and then began to collage fish on top…
After a few fish collages, I decided to round out the works with more animals: tigers, cheetahs, hippos, giraffes, and more. I had a lot of fun “matching” each animal with a plaid landscape.

Aaaaand also adding this sweet wild book addition to the mix as an extension of these animal works and as the start of a new series: the Have a Good Sleep books!
Before Margaret naps, I got into a habit of holding her by the window or this painting in her room and saying “have a good sleep _____ (sky, grass, flowers, etc.)” Thought it would be sweet for us to have a book that had some of our little phrases in it! Starting with this golf one because I thought it would be cute for Father’s Day.
I am going to add a garden one next :)
This month’s free download features a plaid painting from the series. I enjoyed scanning in these patterns and turning them into repeats, possibly for future textiles!
