Eve Arnold · The Business Test

For the last 7 days, I’ve been building micro-digital products.

Yep, 30 digital products, tiny ideas in 30 days.

I know it’s wild, but honestly, I was bored with my own excuses, and I just wanted to build.

The idea in my head: If I built an idea a day, is it reasonable that 1-3 might work and create $1-2k profit each?

The answer, to me, is yes.

Also, I am a person who learns through doing, always have been, always will be, so this is my 2-hour ship something every day project. This is how we’re going so far…

Here’s everything I’ve built:

  1. Butts&Boots - cute animal theme prints

  2. Days with Grandma - digital worksheets for grandparents looking after their grandkids

  3. Digital product mockups - great product shots for Gumroad products in 3 minutes

  4. Micro-digital product prompt - I work 9-to-5, help me create a tiny digital business idea I can make today

  5. Lead magnet prompt generator - I want to get email subs and need a lead magnet idea

  6. 101 micro-digital business ideas - I don’t know what digital business to start? Here are 101 micro-digital business ideas and the viral marketing idea behind them.

(Yep, I’m 1 behind).

Move fast and break things (not intentionally) has always been a good sound bite for me. I like building things, I’m always buying domain names, wondering about ideas, starting things. I’ve done this for years and always fought it.

Focus on one thing, I told myself —just one thing. And I did that with the Part-time Creator Club (which worked), and I did it with another business (that I will talk about in another newsletter, which is now in a position to confidentially get to $5k profit a month). You might be asking why I don’t just invest my time there then, and do that? Because it’s a physical product business, and after 11 months of learning that space, it comes with a unique set of headaches that I’m pausing with for now.

I started Project 30 MDPs because it’s straightforward (I’ll explain the rules below), it’s ridiculous — 30 micro-digital products, really? Well, yep.

This project is simple.

Build a small thing quickly, put it to market, see if it sticks. The plan is simple:

  • Built in 1 day

  • Market in 7 days

  • Review the data after 14 days

Three questions:

  1. Desirability — Do people want this?

  2. Viability — Can it make a profit?

  3. Feasibility — How likely is it to succeed?

If I create a digital product that is selling like hot cakes via Meta profitability (unlikely, but I’m sure it’s been done), that’s three ticks to all of the above, and I’ll keep it.

If it’s a slog to sell, if it’s scrapping by profitability, or I hate running it— it gets cut.

So it’s early, that needs to be considered, but signals are important, so here’s how it works: ✅ - sign this has got legs, 🤔 - too early to tell but not looking good, ❌ - fail / bin it

  • Butts&Boots - 🤔 0 sales after 5 TikTok posts with only 2 views YIKES

  • GrandmaDays - ❌ 0 sales after £30 ad spend and no add-to-carts*

  • Digital Product Mockups - 🤔 70 views, 1 sale ($7) - 1.4% conversion

  • Micro-Digital Product Prompts - ✅ 186 views, 4 sales ($26.63) - 2.15% **

  • Lead Magnet Generator - 🤔 21 views, 4 sales ($0)

  • 101 Business ideas 🤔 - lauched today

*This will only work if ATCs are around £5.

1. People want to see more micro-digital product ideas

There were 25 total sales for the micro-digital product prompt, with 4 people paying for the upgrade, which tells me there is energy and excitement around this area, hence me creating the next iteration in 101 micro-digital business ideas.

2. Freebie first works

The difference between the Digital Product Mockups and the Micro-Digital Product Prompt is a decent amount (very small data set, I appreciate). It tells me, though, that freebies work. Give people value first, and once they’ve got the free thing, they might upgrade to the paid.

3. Getting micro-digital products to work with ads is really hard

Meta swallows up cash fast. If you want to make money with Meta, you either need something that people buy over and over (where the LTV—life-time value is high) or you need a product with a high AOV. I’ll try again next week with another business idea that is a riff on Grandma Days to see if we can have another go.

Next week I’m building 4 websites — I know, yikessss.

Idea 1 — I was Googling this morning and found a search term with 165,000 monthly visits with essentially no digital product offering, which will change next week when I buy and create the first website.

Idea 2 — a lead generation website for service businesses. It should be simple enough. I’ve been thinking lots about locality. The fact that everyone is focused on national issues means that local gets overlooked. If you Google your local service businesses, you’ll see A LOT of opportunity. It means contacting a load of service companies, though, so that will be fun (and scary).

Idea 3 — I’ve had a lead generation idea for Butts&Boots. It could be perfect, I’ve just got to work out how to build it.

Idea 4 — not really a full build, but an iteration on the failure of Grandma Days. I’m thinking of sunsetting Grandma Days (unless someone wants to buy it—message me if you’re interested).

Lots of people seem to be quite interested in the project, so let me know if you’d be interested in a community or a group of some sort where we can post what we’re doing and hold each other to account. I was even thinking of doing daily standups, but that might be too much overhead.

Anyways, happy building.

Much love,

Eve
