Material abundance responds to your manners.

But underneath them sits your self-image, a private portrait of who you believe you are, and that is the thing money is actually answering to. It has been reflecting it back to you all along. Unsentimentally, in numbers.

I know how that sounds. I resisted it for a long time, for years, because I used to believe the distance between me and the life I wanted was a matter of sums. More coming in, less going out, finally cracking an ancient mathematical code I was so sure existed. I ran the numbers like the faithful run rosary beads, certain that if I were only diligent enough, the effort itself would earn me the outcome. It never did. And so the thing standing between me and more was never a number.

It was how I received money when it came, and how I treated my own desire when it spoke to me.

Every time abundance would manifest, I would feel the discomfort, the unconscious apology to some invisible divine witness for the crime of receiving, even as no one around me flinched at all. And the apology did what apologies for wanting more than enough always do. It taught the abundance to keep its distance from me, or else. The reflex to shrink in the exact moment more tried to come closer was undeniable, and it ran my life until the day I understood what it was costing me.

The hardest pill to swallow by far is realizing that what we are told takes time, really only takes a shift.

Here is what I did not understand then, and stake my entire philosophy on now: money is a responsive force that’s been in the room for every standard you ever lowered. It has been taking notes the entire time, just waiting for you to decide.

A Sacred Money Standard is not a budgeting rule. Rules manage behavior. Standards instruct money’s behavior. This is the entire nuance, and almost no one makes it. A rule says do not spend this. A standard is more like this is how I am treated, and money arranges itself accordingly.

Because money is responsive. It is not inert, and it is not neutral. It learns from how you treat your desires, reserves, possessions, and your own time, and then it treats you exactly as you’ve taught it to. If you flinch at a 6k blouse, you teach money that level of abundance is scary and unwelcome. If you apologize for it, you only teach money that you were never meant to hold it. If you lower your standard in the small moments, that teaches money that you can be negotiated down in the large ones.
