Hey everyone. As a follow up to last week’s Substack, I’m here this week to share a blowout tutorial.

This is something I’ve been wanting to share ever since I started this Substack a year ago. One of my favorite things to do is teach, and even though I’m not in a traditional salon anymore and now work privately for myself, I still love sharing everything I’ve learned as a hair stylist..

I don’t actually do blowouts anymore, but I spent 20 years of my career doing them. Every haircut ended with a blowout until I eventually gave myself carpal tunnel. These days, I’ll still do them for weddings, special events, editorial shoots, commercial jobs, or the occasional longtime client, but it’s not something I can do consistently anymore.

What I do still love is teaching them because there are so many incredible tips, from the moment you wash your hair until the end of your blowout. There are ways to make it last longer, hold better, add more body and texture, and make the whole process easier instead of a struggle. It really comes down to having the right tools and using the proper technique.

Today I’m sharing a video that walks you through everything step by step. I’m also going to write the steps out because I think it’s really important to be able to read them as well as watch them.

Before we jump in, I also want to be completely transparent. I was gifted the new ROZ Milk line. I already had and had been using the Milk Hair Serum, and now they’ve released the Milk Styling Mousse.

As a hairstylist with 25 years of experience, but also someone who cut out toxicity after being diagnosed with multiple autoimmune diseases back in 2012, I’ve struggled with styling products because I’ve struggled to find high-performing products within the clean beauty space.

For those of you who followed me through my La Tierra Sagrada journey, you know it was never created to be a styling line. It was created to be medicinal hair care. The focus was always, “How do we get our hair back to optimal health? How do we heal the scalp? How do we incorporate oils into our daily hair rituals?”

I definitely used the Salt Spray all the time on shoots and for styling, but beyond that, my focus was always on the health of the hair first.

So I’m really thrilled that there are so many incredible clean beauty brands starting to create products like these, and I’m going to be as truthful and honest as I always am in this space.

At first, I struggled a little with this product.

Let me preface that by saying I never blow my own hair out. I used to when I lived in New York, because a blowout would last me a full week, but even then I never put product in my hair. My hair is really fine, even though I have a lot of it, and I’ve always found that product makes it harder for me to blow out. My hair has always done better when I just let it be.

So this was actually the first time I ever used mousse on my own hair. I’ve used it on clients for years, but never on myself.

To my surprise, and honestly the BEST surprise, if you watch the video until the end, it was completely worth it. It gave me so much more bounce, volume, and body. Everything we all hope for from a really great blowout.

I will say that this blowout lasted with this much volume for an entire week. I didn’t wash my hair for seven days, and every single one of those days I got compliments on my hair… And that, my friends, is the ultimate goal!

I always say to my clients, “If people are complimenting your hair, you know you’re winning.” We all want people complimenting our hair, right? Not from an ego place at all, but from a place of feeling good about our hair and having that be noticed. It’s being seen, so yes... more of that, please.

So I really do love this product as a performance styling product.

If you’re someone like me who rarely uses products in your hair, you might struggle with it at first like I did, but the outcome is absolutely worth it.

The next thing I’m excited to try is using it with my natural wave. I’ve been seeing so many beautiful videos of people applying it to their natural waves and curls and letting their hair air dry, and that’s much more my vibe, especially living in Southern California where it’s been so hot and dry. My natural wave almost disappears this time of year unless I’ve been in the ocean, but I always air dry my hair, so I think that’s what I’ll try next. If I do, I’ll film it and share that experience with you too.

Below is my complete step-by-step guide to creating a blowout that lasts.

Whether you have weddings coming up, special events, or yes... somehow we’re already talking about the holidays... This is a quick crash course, or what I would actually call a little masterclass, in how to blow out your hair, I hope you follow along.

There’s some good wisdom in here. Good tips from all the years of working in high-end salons, working with high-profile clients, and just some really good takeaways that I hope help you with your own hair.

I hope you enjoy it.
