Opportunities Update for Practicing Writers

For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit later in the day than in the past). But not too long ago, I began sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.

Reminder: These weekly posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to amplify opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. If you haven’t yet had a chance to peruse the August issue, packed with dozens of opportunities, many of which remain open throughout the month and/or beyond, it will remain available to all subscribers until September’s replaces it (at that point, it will move behind the paywall; paid subscribers also have access here to all weekly supplements, including those from August 3 and August 10).

Another note about these Monday posts: Unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in a single city/state/province, these posts do carry such localized opportunities (jobs included).

But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission or application fees, and they must offer (specified) payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge application or participation fees).

And now—the latest gleanings.

• The Fairy Tale Magazine has just opened for submissions on the theme “Food in Fairy Tales,” and will remain open until August 21. “Think gingerbread homes. Think rapunzel/rampion. Strawberries in Snow. Think of a flower you eat to become pregnant. Of the goblins mesmerizing songs, ‘Come buy! Come buy!’ Tell us what feast might appease La Llarona. What might a raja eat in his court? Give us stories of the Magic Pot (Japanese) or poisoned food (Indian). Tells us about nuts that can heal, soup that can win the heart of a prince that’s cooked by a girl wearing all kinds of fur. Tells us the tales from the Caribbean—like Tiger’s Breakfast or Rapunzel’s sugar cane. But don’t stop there! We want fairytales from around the globe. Speak to us of hunger. Desire. Power (or lack of power). Give us your best food in fairy tale style. We want your retellings. Your re-imagined ‘Blog’ by Gretel from the heart of an edible home where you’ve been entrapped by its resident baddie. Write us a recipe perfect for a fairy tale.
