Horses, Horses

By request from a fellow stacker Cass Marketos, here is a post about horses.

The first picture in this post was the first time I’d ever interacted with a horse, and honestly it was terrifying. Star (The horse), was running full speed towards me in a couple feet of snow, I thought I was about to get trampled but somehow managed to take a picture. This was also one of the first pictures that I think informed “my style” that was starting to emerge at the time.

Now, thinking about style and content is hard. I feel like I’m photographing the same things, in loosely the same ways. Cumulatively it’s maybe kind of interesting as a collection, but it can feel boring in the moment. Trying to figure out the “new” thing to make is the challenge of being an artist. I want to see the value in the things I’ve already made and how to build off of them, and wondering if that’s enough. Do I have to make a new kind of picture? Or can I just keep chugging along seeing the world as I do? Ultimately it’s up to me and my satisfaction of the work I make. That is what feels engaging to me about some of these horse pictures, quite a few of them felt like turning points for the types of pictures I wanted to make, but looking back they still feel like they can coexist. Maybe that’s the point, being excited about one thing, but not a big enough leap where it still feels like me. Enjoy - XO RUBY : )
