How was your holiday?

🐇 I spent mine thinking about holidays. Very meta, no? I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, and here’s where I landed: We’ve confused the itinerary with the outcome.

We think of restoration in terms of adding things: the massage, the sunrise yoga, the carefully planned itinerary. But when I think about the trips that actually restored me, they had something much simpler in common.

I slept deeply. I spent time outside. I forgot what day it was.

The TLDR: restoration is an outcome, not an activity.

Which makes me wonder why we spend so much time celebrating hotels for their amenities and so little time talking about the conditions that actually make restoration possible.

A room that’s truly dark. A quiet night’s sleep. Lighting that dims. A late checkout.

Nothing all that glamorous. But perhaps the difference between coming home having traveled, and coming home having actually rested.

Maybe the better question isn’t What did I do on vacation?

Maybe it’s Did I come home feeling more like myself?

And speaking of big opinions...

From this week’s NYTimes. As a longtime fan of Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s writing, I fully expected a hilarious and brutal skewering of the wellness trend so many people love to hate. I Survived a Cold Plunge and All I Got Was Everything I Ever Wanted.”

I was happily amused to discover that even she has let the frigid water come and carry her away.

Happy weekend, all!
