THIS WEEK’S SONG BREAKDOWN IS…
Rumble was the very last song to sneak it’s way onto the album. I had two days of studio left and one strange iPhone recording from my home studio that I kept lifting to the ear of my producer and whispering desperately: “are you getting what i am going for here?”
It had come about for two reasons: I had come straight to the studio from a protest at LA’s City Hall against the illegal deportations of our Latino friends and neighbors. I felt that kind of soul-thrill that I usually do from protests, an understanding that in the real world, if not in the online world, there are a lot of people that feel a loving responsibility for their neighbors, for their own community, for strangers, for the idea of the deep importance of human dignity. As my partner and I made our way through the crowd, I got choked up by how familiar it all felt: we’d been here before, multiple times, listening to beautiful speeches about the broken healthcare system, the importance of protecting Black lives, demanding a reprieve from state-sanctioned police violence, etc. The list really does go on.
