Everyone loves the holodeck. Everyone but me, that is, because I’ve had to watch and review every holodeck episode ever made*, and I’ve come to one inescapable conclusion: it is a magical device that should never, ever be included on a starship. Maybe some kind of pleasure cruise that never leaves Federation space would be okay, but the holodeck is dangerous, both as a machine that occasionally creates sentient life and as a pure horrorshow for the psychology of the people who use it. Everybody remembers the time Data inadvertently made a Moriarty capable of realizing it was in a simulation; few people remember (and even fewer like to talk about) that time Barclay used it to practice his weird personal fantasy life involving various members of the crew.
