At any given moment.

All are manifestations of mental illness, which used to be recognized before it was normalized. The latter is what "masking" has done - and it has worked very well. Having normalized one form of mental illness - pathological hypochondria - it was inevitable that other forms would also be encouraged, such as the idea that a male can "transition" into a female. Literally.

The term is not meant rhetorically.

It is taken to be a physical fact - by the mentally ill - that by thinking of themselves as the opposite sex (or both, at the same time) and by assuming the appearance, mannerisms and "roles" (a term used by some of the disturbed who believe in this hallucination) a male can become female and a female can become a male.

Has become.

This is of course deranged, a word once used to describe an aspect of being seriously mentally. As for example in the case of a person afflicted by a morbid dread of germs and sickness, who performs various rituals - e.g., constantly spraying things down with disinfectant, being afraid of touching or even getting within proximity of other people and, of course, the wearing of "masks."

There was once a firewall protecting such mental illness from spreading. It was the general recognition that people who constantly sprayed down everything with disinfectant, who recoiled from shaking hands and - above all - who wore "masks" were not right in the head. This served the healthful purpose of discouraging the spread of such mental illness, via salutary social pressure.

A really good example of this being the well-known comedian and game show host Howie Mandell of Deal or No Deal. He is an admitted OCD hypochondriac, meaning he understands he has a mental problem. It is kept in check by the fact that he is aware he's not normal - in respect of his dread of germs and catching colds.

He used to talk openly - and ruefully - of his struggles, before it became normal to be a hypochondriac, describing how his illness had limited his ability to form and maintain normal relationships and to function in society.

People rise - or fall - to whatever the standard is.

Three years ago, the standard was that hypochondria wasn't normal because it was aberrant. And it was aberrant because there was no reason - as in, objective reality - to live in perpetual dread of germs and catching cold. Because catching cold and germs are a normal part of life.

Then - almost just-like-that - normality became abnormal. If you weren't wearing a "mask" and performing strange rituals to ward off germs you were considered . . . mentally ill. The abnormal who had been normalized even came up with a name for those who maintained their sanity in the midst of general insanity: Antisocial Masking Disorder. If you didn't think "masks" worked and - far more "serious" - refused to wear one - then that was the "diagnosis."

Around the same time, other forms of abnormality were also and almost-just-like-that transitioned to a New Normal. People who, just a few years ago, were understood to be confused about their identity, who were showing signs of schizophrenia, were understood to be in need of help. Not encouragement. If you have an uncle who thinks he is Napoleon, you do not encourage him in his delusion by addressing him as Emperor. You help him recover his identity, by helping him to realize he is your uncle and not the Emperor of the French.

There is perhaps nothing dangerous in pretending you are what you aren't. So long as you know you aren't. So long as you do not expect - much less demand - others to pretend you are. Of course, the latter is precisely the danger we are confronted with - emanating angrily from people who have been encouraged in pathological thinking, who believe that by thinking of themselves as the opposite sex (or both, at the same time) and by assuming the appearance, mannerisms and "roles" they literally become the opposite sex. Or both - at the same time.

And you'd better not "deny" it.

This is how a society loses its mind.

Further evidence of which manifests in the proposal to make "masking" a permanent sickness in - of all places - every medical setting. Hospitals, clinics, elder care facilities and so on. That such is even proposed is itself a dire symptom of the degree to which pathological thinking has infected this society. The very people and institutions that once cared for the mentally as well as physically ill are become the places where mental illness is now most concentrated and most persistent.

As well as most undiagnosed and untreated.
