Here’s something that floored me early in my psychoanalytic training: research on stable, happy marriages shows that they require a ratio of 5 positive interactions for every negative interaction.

Not one-to-one. Five-to-one.

That’s the math. That’s how much more powerful negativity is in our emotional accounting.
