While at a film festival or during fashion week, anywhere in the world, there are little hidden treasures and insider's secrets that can only be discussed in the pages of a diary. This is Nina's personal journey in a very public world.
The 1999 title has just been added to the festival’s inaugural Repertory Programme as a UK Premiere of the 4K Restoration and is the controversial fifth feature from the acclaimed filmmaker, adapted from Herman Melville's ‘Pierre; or, The Ambiguities’ set in contemporary fin de siècle France — starring Guillaume Depardieu, Yekaterina Golubeva and Catherine Deneuve.
While the women may be few, the stars are the winners in this line up, with films featuring Robert Pattinson, John Malkovich, Valeria Golino, Alba Rohrwacher, Kate and Rooney Mara and much much more.
Well, we’ve got the lineups for both sidebars, Critics’ Week and the Giornate degli autori, as well as all the jury members participating to evaluate the different sections. Plus, we’ve got the opening and closing night films… Till tomorrow when we’ll get the full lineup!
Of course, I’ll also give you a list of this year’s films which were awarded prizes, but honestly with a motto that goes “Some Films Can’t Wait” Raindance is a festival that goes above and beyond its promise and premise. And its awards, even if it is an Oscar-qualifying festival.
As a media partner to the longstanding, extraordinary festival, I have been lucky enough to watch a few gems participating this year and will also moderate some Q&A’s with the creatives behind some of the titles. So come on down to the Vue Piccadilly from June 17th to the 26th!
The DFI’s ‘Atlas of Cinematic Affinities: 15 Years of Doha Film Institute’ is a landmark publication and the first-of-its-kind documentation of collective cinematic journeys of independent filmmakers from the MENA region and beyond.
Along with Akuol de Mabior and Bao Nguyen, the group of five esteemed filmmakers will receive production grants to work on individual short films which will world premiere at the 2027 Rotterdam Film Festival.
Handed out to celebrities and VIPs and, on many occasions, sported on the various red carpets throughout the Festival de Cannes, these were personal standouts from this year’s most glamorous gift lounge, nestled inside the JW Marriott.
Audiences decide what is worthy of their attention and not critics and cinema insiders, as was obvious at the packed, enthusiastically charged screening of the American movie star’s directorial debut. Ultimately, the audience will also decide the fate of ‘Parallel Tales’ by the Iranian helmer, which showcases a very, very special Isabelle Huppert.
It is unusually quiet here in Cannes, although everyone is expecting it to get rowdy and noisy later tonight, when a “high octane midnight screening” event of the original ‘The Fast and the Furious’ is slated to take place. But for me, this first day on the ground has been all about a soulful Mexican film, ‘Ashes’ by Diego Luna. Yes, that Diego Luna!
