The Czech version of this article was published on 7th July 2015. Somehow, I forgot (or was too lazy) to translate it. But now is the time to remediate this mistake.
Betrayal, death, politics, and sex (in alphabetical order) – that’s how you could describe the series Game of Thrones. This time, however, it wasn’t under the baton of HBO, so it was just death, politics, and betrayal. So those who criticised me last year for not including enough nudity in my photos from the Game of Thrones LARP won’t be happy this time either – there still isn’t any.
But even without the nudity, there must be something about the game, otherwise I wouldn’t have taken time off work for it - And I definitely don’t regret it. Even though a significant part of it is really just about politics and sitting around at various meetings, I wasn’t bored as a photographer. I probably walked more around King’s Landing than most of the gold cloaks put together, but what wouldn’t I do for a few decent photos?
And when I wasn’t taking photos, I was playing a role, which isn’t a flawed concept at all. A role for late in the evening, when there isn’t enough light for the equipment to work well enough. Some unimportant character who needs to talk to two or three players and then can sit in a pub waiting for morning, because leaving the city at night would be pure folly.
There were even moments when I wasn’t taking photos or playing, moments when the heat got to me and I sank into the shade somewhere. For example, into the Court of Wonders for a good cup of tea.
The story of this LARP is quite different from the original book, but it made me consider when I would find the time to read this book series and whether I should finish watching the last series of the TV show. I’ll likely manage to do that before I photograph the next part of the local story.
