Mlha [larp]

The Czech version of this article was published on 10th April 2015. Somehow, I forgot (or was too lazy) to translate it. But now is the time to remediate this mistake.

One day, I picked up the phone from Kamil. He asked me to shoot the premiere of The Fog, a LARP that people had been saying was an excellent horror. I didn’t say no, so I did the right thing.

It all happened in a cabin in the woods in northern Bohemia. After a Friday night party, there were the Saturday workshops, during which I finished post-processing the photos from the two PLAY LARP games, and then I started to focus on the events around me. The game kicked off in gorgeous sunny weather, but the light faded, and the atmosphere thickened. As dusk fell, the situation got more intense, and at times, it was difficult to decide whether to take pictures or just leave and not spoil the atmosphere with my presence. Sometimes, I stepped away to avoid ruining the atmosphere, which was probably for the best. There are still a few photos that would reveal too much of the story, and I’ll be able to post those in a year or so (or so, Kamil said). A few hours after darkness fell, when things were getting very tense, someone turned off the lights; all the remaining light was provided only by a few candles. That was too much for my current camera, which meant the end of the game for me. So, if anyone wants to know how it ended a few hours later, they’ll have to go to the game and play it.

Whether it’s horror is a matter of opinion, not according to the organisers, and whether it’s excellent, you’ll have to ask the players. But it was definitely something to watch and listen to.
