Rigs starts kindergarten in three weeks and I am not okay about it. 🥲
So this one’s about transitions… why they’re so hard for me, and everything I do to get through them. I’m the deepest feeler you’ll ever meet, and I’ve learned (from my therapist, honestly) that the move isn’t to rush past the sad. It’s to sit down in it for a minute and let yourself feel it all the way.
You don’t move past it. You move through it.
I also get into the practical stuff: making a little book to wrap up the summer, building a fall bucket list so I don’t spend three seasons moping, the bedtime questions I ask my kids, the “and then I was okay” trick for helping them retell a hard day, our monthly family meetings, and the family Gmail I should have set up five years ago.
And at the end, the thing I keep coming back to — you cannot do this alone. I don’t have a big sister, but I’ve collected them, and they’re the reason I know this is going to be okay.
It’s going to feel like you’re a baby giraffe trying to walk for a minute.
And then you’ll figure it out.
You always do.
P.S. A little behind the curtain: the podcast is one of the extras I make just for paid subscribers who help support this space and our family. But I don’t want to leave anyone out, so there’s a free preview to listen to—just tap the play button or the Listen Now bar above! If you want the whole episode + other extras like the Big Sis Chat (our private group where you can ask me anything, swap notes with other moms and oldest daughters, and get the honest, no-judgment take you’d get from a big sister who’s a few steps ahead of you), you can upgrade anytime. I’d love to have you!
