You Are Being Discipled by Something.

I picked up my phone to check one thing that I can’t even remember.

Forty minutes later, I had made it to the bottom of a feed that had taken me on a journey from a random search to an entire deluge of information that I had not known before and stirred up a low hum of anxiety that had me feeling restless.

The strangest part was how normal it felt.

But something had happened. Something happens every single time.

Discipleship.

We treat it as a church word. A Sunday word. Something with a curriculum and a small group and a workbook. But strip it all the way down and it means something plainer, and more unsettling, than that. Discipleship is the slow shaping of a person by what they repeatedly think, and form opinions on. A disciple is someone who has been formed, over time, into the likeness of what they gave their attention to.

By that definition you are being discipled all day long.

Not just on Sundays, but every moment of every day. Every scroll is a lesson. Every feed is a teacher. And most of us signed up for a curriculum we never enrolled in.

The feed is discipling our life.

It is patient. It is tireless. And it has no agenda for your good.

It shows you a version of the world ten thousand times until that version feels like simple reality. It shows you other people’s best mornings until your ordinary day starts to feel like a problem to solve. It rewards outrage, so you slowly become someone more easily outraged. It rewards comparison, so you slowly become someone who compares. None of this arrives as a decision. It arrives as a mood. A reflex. A default.

It arrives, eventually, feeling like your personality.

The formation is invisible precisely because it worked. You do not feel discipled.

You feel like yourself, but a self is not a fixed thing you were handed at birth and have simply carried around ever since.

You are being made, continually. Every day. Out of what you give attention to on repeat.

Every time you take a thought, your brain lays down a physical trace for it. A faint electrical path. Travel that path once and it stays faint. Travel it a thousand times and it wears into a groove, then a rut, then a road you take without ever deciding to take it. The neurons that fire together wire together. Whatever you repeat, you slowly become.

Which means attention is not just what you happen to notice. Attention is the thing quietly building you.

And the algorithm knows this better than you do. It was designed by people who study, for a living, exactly how attention grooves itself. It runs on the same loop a slot machine runs on. A small reward, unpredictably timed, arriving just often enough to keep you pulling the handle. Not because the people who built it are cartoon villains, but because that is what holds human attention, and holding your attention is the entire business.

So the repetition is happening whether you chose it or not. And whoever owns the repetition is doing the forming. Right now, for a lot of us, the thing that owns the repetition is a feed built by people who have never met you and do not love you, but ironically probably know the absolute MOST about you.

It’s unsettling to recognize this reality. When you talk to your husband about an idea you have and almost instantaneously, you begin to receive ads to make that idea happen.

We all recognize it, and have become accustomed to this reality and give it maybe one fleeting thought and move on.

Paul saw all of this two thousand years before the phone.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him” (Genesis 1:27). You were made in an image. The question was never whether you would carry one. The question is which one you are being remade into.

Then Paul, writing to a scattered and distracted church, names the mechanism exactly. We are all, he says, “beholding the glory of the Lord, being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Read that slowly. We are transformed into the image of what we behold.

This is beyond just a metaphor. Like a potter with a blob of clay, with persistence and formation, the potter creates a formed object for a utility or to reflect the creator. Behold Christ, and you are slowly formed toward Christ. Behold the feed, and you are slowly formed toward the feed. The beholding is never neutral. It is always working on you.

Which is why Paul says the thing he says next, the sentence we quote and then mostly ignore. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

Look at the two verbs. Conformed is passive. It is the thing that happens to you when you do not choose. You get conformed the way a riverbank gets shaped by moving water, without consent, without effort, by sitting in the current long enough. Transformed is the active one. It is the thing that only ever happens on purpose.

What I’ve noticed in my own life, and those of my children, which is the closest example of how someone is “becoming”...

No one drifts toward the person they’re meant to become.

You do not accidentally end up more grounded. You do not drift your way into more discerning, more patient, more like Christ, more like the actual person you hoped to be. Drift only runs one direction. Every day you do not choose your formation, the current chooses it for you.

So the question was never whether you are being discipled…the question is by what. By whom.

And I think some part of you already knows which way the current has been carrying you, because you can feel it in your body. The low hum of comparison you did not used to carry. The opinions that showed up in you fully formed and angrier than you actually are. The restlessness that spikes the second you set the phone down and the room goes quiet.

That is not your personality. That is a formation.

And the good news is that formation can be reversed when it’s faced with purpose.

The exact process that formed you without your consent can be picked up and transformed. The grooving works both ways. You can take the one belief the drift quietly installed, the specific lie running underneath your specific week, and you can go after it at the root. Name it. Tell the truth about it out loud. Travel a truer thought often enough, in real time, and it starts to wear its own groove.

That is not a life hack. That is the actual architecture of a renewed mind, which is the actual thing Romans 12:2 has been describing the whole time. Repetition built the rut. Repetition, chosen, builds the road out.

That is what I built The Bold Life Reset to do.

Five days, August 10 through 14. Every morning a short video lesson lands in your inbox. Watch it or listen to it, whatever your real morning allows, toddler and coffee and all. Then every morning I go live right here to coach it in real time, take your questions, and do the work alongside you. We go after the loop together. The thought, the feeling, the action, the result. The belief the drift installed, and the truer one that takes its place.

It is free for paid subscribers.

If you are not paid yet, join today, and you’ll get the Reset, plus access to the Toolbox, the Collective (private community), the paywalled writing, workshop discounts, and the Book Club. You can join here.

Upgrade by midnight Sunday, August 9, and the first lesson to The Reset drops Monday morning!

Going into this week, you will be formed. By the things that have your attention like the feed, the news, the music you listen to, the people you’re talking with, or by something you chose, on purpose, toward the person God actually made you to be.

One of those is happening whether you decide or not. The other one starts with a decision.

This can be applied at any moment of your day, and you can recognize it by simply asking yourself what is forming you right now? Is it a nagging thought, something you said yes or no to, or the scroll that keeps grooving a little deeper.

Recognize this influence, and decide if you’re drifting or choosing to push against the current. Are you passively being conformed or making the choice to be transformed.

Emily
