The things I'd happily spend money on again (and the ones I wouldn't)

I don't participate in many of the trends that pop up on my phone, but "5 things that are worth the money" was too good to resist. I shared mine on Instagram (TL;DR: hair color, pre-cut parchment paper, fancy travel accessories, good knives and getting them professionally sharpened, plus Chanel's highlighting balm in ‘Transparent’ all made the list). But ever since, I've kept thinking of more things I should've included. So here's the extended cut: everything else that deserved a spot, along with the (surprising?) things I personally don't think are worth the money.

Worth every penny:

• Beautiful everyday objects you've wanted for years. For me, it was a set of Sabre flatware. I questioned whether I'd really notice that much of a difference, but it's amazing how much joy a beautiful spoon can bring to something as simple as a late-night bowl of Crispix. It was the opposite of an impulse purchase, and once I finally settled on chocolate brown, my only regret was waiting so long.

• Hiring someone for the thing you keep procrastinating. When there's something you technically can do yourself, but somehow put it off for...years, it's time to bring in a professional. We had a spot on our guest room ceiling that needed to be repaired, spackled, and painted, and every time I walked by it, I felt equal parts annoyed and guilty. A handyman fixed it in an afternoon for $150, and he obviously did a much better job than we ever would have.

  

• Tailoring your clothes (and having a good cobbler). It took me way too long to appreciate how much of a difference a good tailor makes in the way your clothes fit, feel, and look. The same goes for a good cobbler. Years ago, I was this close to donating my Chanel flats because they were so beat up that my friends were begging me to get rid of them. But after taking them to my cobbler, I genuinely questioned whether he'd just handed me a brand-new pair. If you're in LA, I swear by Art House of Tailoring on Ventura and Fast & Best Shoe Repair.

  The rest of my list includes the one luxury purchase I'd make again in a heartbeat, the home splurge I'd recommend to just about anyone, and the things I don't think are worth the money anymore.
