Before this trend took over the entire internet, I had already started writing this post. I love to know what other women think is worth their hard earned dollars, so I’m including the original list and links at the bottom. But I want to come at this a different way first. Yes, what’s worth our money is interesting. What’s worth our time is more interesting. What is worth pausing for? What’s worth carving out precious minutes for? So many things. Here it is: my list of “pricy” things, time edition.
Staying underneath a sleeping child until your arm falls asleep. Noticing the enviable length of his eyelashes. His freckles. His cowlick. The almost imperceptible breath in and out, heavy and smooth with sleep. Don’t shift too much. This too shall (sadly) pass.
Burning the midnight oil while the rest of the world (and your professional universe) is sleeping to reach the bottom of the rabbit hole. Relishing the exciting feeling of being squarely in the zone. A warm cup of midnight coffee steaming by your side. A candle flickering just so, reminding you of the sometimes rarity of this passionate type of work. Keep going.
A Sunday well spent prepping and cleaning and zhuzhing the house. A long audiobook in your ears. No one to distract you. The laundry is whirring, the dishwasher spinning, the windows are open and the smell of fresh and clean is all around you. This kind of work matters, and the feeling at the end of the day will be worth it.
Waking up before the house does. The coffee not yet cold. The to-do list not yet loud. Ten quiet minutes that belong to no one but you before the day starts asking things of you.
A long, winding phone call with the friend who knew you before any of this: the career, the kids, the house. The one who asks how you’re actually doing and waits for the real answer.
Writing something out by hand when it would be so much faster to text. A card. A real note. The knowledge that someone will keep it long after they’ve forgotten every message you’ve ever sent them.
And in case you came here for another format of this list, here you go! Tried and true. Repurchased and recommended. My investment pieces I think are truly worth the dollars they cost:
SkinBetter Science Tone Smart Tinted SPF - Blends to match your skin tone perfectly. Doesn’t pull orange. Covers really well. My go-to when I’m not wearing makeup.
Sarah Flint Perfect Emma Pumps - These shoes are pricy, but they are incredibly comfortable. I have a black pair and a nude pair and have worn them for years.
Helix Cooling Pillow - We are pillow aficionados here and this cooling pillow is great. I am a hot sleeper and constantly wake up to flip my pillow over. Not anymore.
Masseter Botox - The facial slimming effect this has on me is pretty significant. I am a teeth grinder and this helps so much with that too.
Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Mattress - On every bed we own. This particular version stays cool and is (I would say) somewhere between medium and soft on the firmness scale.
Ruti On the Loose Barrel Pants - I didn’t want to believe the hype. But I believe it now. I have a navy pair and they’re super soft (almost silky) and very flattering.
TUMI Celina Backpack - I bought this more than a decade ago and take it with me whenever I travel (I pack my purse). It’s comfortable, easy to clean, and holds a ton.
Tuckernuck Chloe Dress - It’s the dress every woman needs in her closet. The material is sturdy and durable and the cut is so timeless and feminine.
What would you add to either list? I’d love to know in the comments.
