Hi everyone,
We’re in those final deep weeks of summer when I’m trying to savor and extend every moment. To relish the languor required by the heat, to enjoy the tomatoes, peaches and corn and to fill my well for a heated political fall.
In the news:
There was a big election this week, with the headline coming out of Wisconsin being moderate David Crowley eke-ing out a close win over Francesca Hong. Peggy Flanagan also beat Angie Craig in Minnesota. In addition to the comments I made on Monday about money not being a surefire path to victory, I think another of the biggest takeaways from this primary cycle is that polls and Polymarket alike failed to predict the outcome. Additionally, Mike Lindell of MyPillow lost his primary. And in a race that’s getting very little attention, in Connecticut, 78-year-old John Larson lost his seat to a 46-year-old local mayor.
Trump issued an executive order to block federal funding for schools with COVID vaccine mandates and recommended cutting the number of recommended childhood vaccines.
Trump also hid in a catering cart to sneak onto a different Airplane leaving Turkey amid an Iranian assassination threat, leaving Rubio, Bessent and Stephen Miller to ride home on the decoy.
Susan B Anthony Pro-Life America endorsed the Comstock Act as a path to a nationwide backdoor abortion ban, putting further anti-choice advocacy might behind a path Attorney General Blanche indicated he might see favorably.
Karoline Leavitt announced she’s leaving the Trump Admin as press secretary. The internet celebrated this as a win, which confused me (another press secretary will take her place?) and anti-feminists are spinning this with the post-tradwife framework of a woman’s truest place:

Senate Democrats advise party to break out economic populism. (Semafor) Sens. Adam Schiff of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Chris Murphy of Connecticut, and Tina Smith of Minnesota wrote a memo to their colleagues arguing that Democrats should use Congress’ August recess to lean into economic populism and take on corporate interests — not just “simply oppose Trump and his billionaire friends.”
