For as long as Hurdling has been a thing (four years this summer!), I’ve wanted to find the right way to take things from URL into IRL. I love writing this little orange newsletter from my desk at home, from cafés in East London and from the kitchen tables of wherever I happen to be staying. But it’s always been part of the plan to use Hurdling to bring people together and figure out how to get over the things that get in our way in real time and real life.
So, I’m absolute buzzing to share that the first ever IRL event is actually happening – and you’re invited. This is the first of the Hurdles for Dinner series (and more will be announced soon). These events are designed to be close knit dinners that let us really get into how we get over the things that get in our way. Each dinner will have a set theme with brilliant guest speakers who’ll help us do just that. And for the first ever one, I wanted to kick things off with a theme that’s close to my little Welsh heart: heritage.
According to the poet Brian Harris, to be Welsh is ‘not to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth, but with music in your blood and with poetry in your soul.’ But apparently, it’s also to be born with a lifetime of sheep jokes, abysmal accent impressions and Gavin & Stacey references ahead of you, too. But every Welsh person knows that there’s so much more to us beyond the lazy stereotypes. so what does it mean to be Welsh today? And what does it mean to be Welsh outside of Wales?
Join us at Bara Café in Peckham for an evening of sharing our food, oversharing our feelings and working out how to get over the things that get in our way. We’ll be joined by Phie Mckenzie and Dagmar Bennett from Clwb Creative Cymru and Ryan March from Alternative Wales for a panel diving into all things modern Welsh heritage – and all the hurdles that come with it.
Then, we’ll be wined and dined with divine Welsh food from the incredible founders of Bara Café, too. So bring your handbags and your gladrags and snap up your tickets – before they sell like Welsh cakes.
PS. You don’t have to be Welsh! You just have to be curious about and interested in Welshness and hungry for Welsh food.
