When I first became aware of the fact that I was most likely surviving in a “fight or flight” nervous system state, I did what most people do: start meditating.

I downloaded all the meditation apps, I set myself targets of “just 10 minutes a day,” I tried to follow all the advice like sitting in silence before I turn on my phone in the morning, not eating lunch while distracted, and generally trying to chill the F out.

The issue is, all the conventional advice didn’t work for me.

In fact, it almost felt like the more “nervous system regulating” boxes I was able to check, the worse I felt. It made me feel hopeless, in a way.

Like, I was meditating, reducing the inputs, and I still felt stressed. If anything, the forced silence made me feel agitated, anxious.

The more I dove into nervous system research, the more I understood that we all have different nervous system baselines.
